EARTH
WALK
Celebrating Peace, Earth
and Justice
Saturday,
April 24, 2004
Since 1981 people in Victoria
devoted to peace, the earth and justice
have gathered on a Saturday in April to
celebrate our communities and to promote
unity.
The Walk began two decades
ago as the Peace Walk, and in the 1990s
was called the Earth Walk and this year
we are returing to our roots.
This years focus:
Co-Creating Solutions
to local issues
that challenge us as British Columbians
and as Canadians, including Healthcare,
Education, Indigenous Treaty, Working Forest
Legislation and the general protection of
our collective resouces, rights and responsibilites.
to global issues
that challenge us as we work towards a civil
society including the humanitarian crisis
in Middle East with the Occupation of Iraq
and Palestine, the crisis' in Africa.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To foucs on peace
is to actively engage in co-creating the
kind of world that we want to live in and
the kind of world we want for our children.
Co-creating a culture of peace
requires dialogue, diplomacy, creativity
and a sharing of power as we collectively
work towards the development and implementation
of socially, environmentally and economically
just and sustainable practices. Practices
that promote fair and equitable solutions
by looking at the root causes of violence
rather than resorting to futher militarism,
oppression and economic injustice.
To focus on earth
is to focus on our environment
and to consciously improve our relationship
as stewards of the earth. It involves the
basics of reycyling, reducing and reusing
and includes developing and implementing
creative and sustainable products and services
that minimize our individual and collective
footprint on the earth.
The focus on justice
reflects a shared growing
concern over large free trade deals and
their strong tendency to lower democratic,
peace, environment, health and labour standards
worldwide and at home in British Columbia.
Challenging injustice
whether it is in our own lives or in a global
context requires us to educate and support
each other as we reconcile our understanding
and our actions.
Many people in our various
communities are working towards creating
a culture of peace through socially, environmentally
and economically just and sustainable practices
and this is the time to promote what you
do!
Unity is the Heart
of Community - Join In
The Walk begins at
Centennial Square at 12:00 pm and
moves on to a rally at the Legislature where
speeches on current issues and lots of related
music abounds.
A major feature
is the event is the opportunity for organizations
to promote what they do in the community
all year long by setting up a display table
at the Walk.
We have had as many as fifty
groups in the past share issues, solution
focused idea's or products that are friendly
to the earth and fairly traded, and we look
forward to exceeding the number of tables
at this year Walk.
